I am heading to the Lunar and Planetary Sciences Conference near Houston, TX. I got a rental car to head to the airport. The one available was a Toyota Camry.
Honestly, I am not worried about a stuck accelerator. I can always shift the car into neutral or turn the ignition off and then turn it into the on position without restarting the car. This last option powers the steering and brakes without turning the car on. I figure I will be ok. Plus I dont think the Camry is part of the recall.
So the car was nice. It has ample power to speed up even going up steep hills. I was impressed with how peppy it seemed. I had room for my long legs and my head. There appeared to be enough room in the back seat for a small person directly behind me.
I liked the radio, the buttons were in a nice location, accept the volume knob. It had a nice sound to it. It was easily adjustable while driving.
There were power outlets in the center armrest console. It would have been nice to also include an auxilary inlet to put in a device for the radio.
As for what I did not like. I was not able to get the cruise control to turn on. I pushed the button to turn it on but it did not. This is probably a problem with this particular rental car.
I also do not like the dials for the heater and air. They were odd and not in a place easily reachable. That gets to be annoying for me.
I strongly did not like the position of the clock. I could not see it while I was driving. I had to avert my gaze from the road to look way down the instrument panel to find it. That seemed dangerous and not a good location.
There was no foot rest for my left foot. Most cars have a tilted place to rest your left foot while driving. This did not have such a plac and I found that annoying.
I also did not like the pedal positions. For my big feet, the brake pedal was way to close to the accelerator to be comfortable. In fact, the edge of my shoe momentarily once got stuck under the brake pedal as I was needing to brake. No incidents but that is stronger than inconvenience.
Overall, it was a nice car with good handling and pep. I do not fit (brake pedal/gas pedal) and did not like the panel.
