I think it is amazing that NASA's space shuttle has been able to fly a long as it has. Given that it was designed in the late 1970's when computer memory was nonexistent (by today's measurements in GB) and they have to use tape drives. It is truly a tribute to what our hard earned money can do in the hands of politicians and bureaucrats. Every time the shuttle flew major pieces of it had to be replaced... and yet they reuse the casings of the solid rocket boosters by spending untold man hours straightening the things out. It was so heavy with paperwork that I am amazed it ever flew.
At the same time I mock the shuttle's paper load, I have a huge respect for the engineering and design of the whole thing. It is a feat that it i fully automated, except for the landing gear. Uttering amazing.
